Study: Prevalence of Diabetes Mellitus among Adults in Jertoude Village, Northern State, Sudan (2026–2027) A community-based cross-sectional study by medical students of the University of Dongola (supervisor: Prof. Mohamed Osman Abdelaziz). About 235 randomly selected adults (≥18 years) will complete a questionnaire, have basic body measurements and blood pressure taken, and be screened with a finger-prick glucose test. Why: Diabetes is rising in Sudan, with about 19% prevalence and many undiagnosed cases reported in nearby areas, but no village-level data exists for rural Northern State. Objectives: Estimate the prevalence of diabetes (known and newly diagnosed) and prediabetes, identify risk factors, assess community awareness, and give recommendations to health authorities. Expected outcomes: A baseline prevalence estimate, referral of undiagnosed cases for confirmation and care, identification of key risk factors, and evidence to guide screening and prevention in rural areas. Ethics: Approval from the Faculty Ethics Committee, voluntary informed consent, and confidential data. Request: Permission and coordination support to conduct the study in Jertoude. Budget: 1,701,104 SDG.

Restricted access: Only the researchers and the supervisor will have access to the data, and any data collectors will sign a confidentiality agreement. Reporting: Results will be presented in aggregate form only, with no information that could identify any participant. Referrals: Referral slips for abnormal results will be handed directly to the participant. Data disposal: Identifying information and paper records will be destroyed after completion of the study. Right to withdraw: Participants may withdraw at any time, and their data will be removed on request.
The study involves minimal risk. Participants may experience mild, temporary discomfort during blood glucose testing and anthropometric measurements. Minor pain, bruising, or bleeding may occur at the blood sampling site. Confidentiality and privacy of all participants will be strictly maintained.
Potential Benefits Participants: Free glucose screening, early detection and referral of undiagnosed cases, blood pressure and BMI checks, and health education. Community: Better understanding of the local diabetes burden and increased health awareness. Health authorities: Baseline data to guide screening, prevention programs, and resource allocation in rural Northern State. Science: Added evidence on diabetes in rural northern Sudan to support future research.
