This cross-sectional, hospital-based study aims to estimate the prevalence of postpartum depression (PPD) and identify its associated factors among women attending Dongola Maternity Hospital, Northern State, Sudan, in 2026. A sample of 424 women aged 18 years or older who delivered within the preceding 12 months will be selected by systematic random sampling. Data will be collected through an interviewer-administered Arabic questionnaire covering socio-demographic, obstetric, social support and infant-related factors, together with the 10-item Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS), with a score of ≥12 indicating probable PPD. Data will be analyzed using SPSS, with chi-square tests and multivariable logistic regression to identify factors associated with PPD. The study is expected to provide the first local data on PPD in Northern State and to help guide routine screening, counselling and referral in maternal health services.

No names or personal identifiers will be recorded; each questionnaire will be identified by a serial number only. Data will be used solely for research purposes and kept confidential. Access to the data will be limited to the research team and supervisor. Completed questionnaires will be stored securely, and the electronic data will be entered into a password-protected computer. Results will be reported in aggregate form only, so no individual participant can be identified.
Minimal risk: possible mild emotional discomfort when answering questions about mood and feelings; participants may skip any question or withdraw at any time without affecting their care, and positive screens will be referred for support.
Participants will gain no direct financial benefit, but they may benefit from an increased awareness of postpartum mental health. Any woman who screens positive for probable depression (EPDS score ≥12) will be sensitively informed and referred for further assessment and support. For society and the health system, the study will provide the first local data on the prevalence and associated factors of postpartum depression in Northern State. This will help clinicians identify high-risk mothers, and support the integration of routine screening, counselling and referral into maternal health services, which benefits mothers, their infants and families.
