Study Description The study entitled “Assessment of Nurses’ Knowledge Regarding Acute Kidney Injury Among Adult Patients at Dongola Specialized Hospital, Northern State, Sudan” will be conducted using a descriptive cross-sectional hospital-based study design. The study aims to assess nurses’ knowledge regarding acute kidney injury (AKI), including its definition, causes and risk factors, classification and stages, signs and symptoms, complications, early recognition, nursing assessment, nursing diagnoses, and the nursing role in the care of adult patients with AKI. The study will be conducted at Dongola Specialized Hospital in the Northern State of Sudan. The target population will consist of nurses working at the hospital. The study sample will consist of 142 nurses selected using a random sampling technique. Data will be collected using a structured, self-administered questionnaire consisting of 40 questions written in Arabic to facilitate participants’ understanding and accurate responses. Participation in the study will be voluntary. Before data collection, the necessary ethical approval and administrative permissions will be obtained from the relevant authorities. Informed consent will be obtained from participants after explaining the purpose and procedures of the study. Participants will have the right to refuse participation or withdraw at any time without any penalty or effect on their employment. Confidentiality and privacy will be maintained throughout the study. Participants’ names and other direct personal identifiers will not be included in the questionnaire. The collected data will be used exclusively for academic and research purposes and will be handled securely. No patient records or identifiable patient information will be collected as part of this study. The findings are expected to identify strengths and gaps in nurses’ knowledge regarding AKI and provide information that may help support future educational and training activities aimed at improving nursing care for adult patients with acute kidney injury.

Participation will be voluntary, and no personally identifying information, such as participants’ names or staff identification numbers, will be collected. Each questionnaire will be assigned a unique code to maintain confidentiality. All collected data will be kept securely in password-protected electronic files and/or locked storage accessible only to the research team. The data will be used solely for academic and research purposes and will be reported in aggregate form, without identifying individual participants. No individual responses will be shared with hospital management or other unauthorized persons. Data will be retained and disposed of in accordance with the requirements of the approving ethics committee and applicable institutional policies.
This study is expected to involve minimal risk to participants. Possible risks may include the time required to complete the questionnaire, mild psychological discomfort when answering questions about their knowledge, or concerns about how their responses may be perceived in the workplace. Participation will be entirely voluntary, and participants may decline to answer any question or withdraw from the study at any time without penalty or negative consequences. Participation or non-participation will not affect their employment, professional evaluation, or relationship with the hospital. Confidentiality will be maintained throughout the study, and the findings will be reported in aggregate form.
There may be no direct personal benefit to participants from taking part in this study. However, the findings may help identify gaps in nurses’ knowledge regarding acute kidney injury (AKI), support the development of appropriate educational and training programs, and improve nurses’ awareness of early recognition, prevention, and nursing management of AKI. The results may also provide useful information for hospital administrators, nursing educators, and healthcare professionals to support improvements in nursing practice and the quality of patient care at Dongola Specialized Hospital and potentially in similar healthcare settings.
